ABOUT THIS PROGRAM

In 1643, the great genius Claudio Monteverdi passed away, and Marc-Antoine Charpentier, one of the leading figures of the French Baroque, was born.

This program illustrates the connection between the two musicians, as represented by the Roman composer Carissimi. As Charpentier’s teacher, Carissimi composed the famous biblical oratorio *Jephthah* in 1648, considered one of the finest masterpieces of the Italian Baroque.

The splendor of these timeless works transports us to a world of spirituality, theatricality, and aesthetic emotion.
